Rodents are very clever mammals. Their breeding rate is also high as one pair can multiply to 800 in a year. They infest, destroy, contaminate more than they feed, because of their continue “GNOWING ACTION”. House Mouse- They are small in size very clever, good climbers and live in homes & social environments.

Roof Rats- They are large in size, their tail is longer than their head+body length, sexual maturity attended in 8 to

12 weeks. Body weighs up to 150-200gms.

Norway Rats- Commonly found in drainage. Their tail is short than their head+body length. They prefer the food containing carbohydrates & proteins. Body weighs up to 400gm.

Bandicoot- Very ferocious looking rodent with long face. It does considerable damage to fields & buildings. Adult weight is between 300 to 1000gm.

Damages Caused By Rats (Rodents):

These rodents have rootless incisor teeth by which they are capable of chewing anything they want to gnaw through. Therefore, they become the most destructive creatures ever. They can destroy everything such as clothes, green farms, insulating wires pipelines, or even food materials. This can cause a great loss of capital and resources and one can even die due to electrocuting caused by their chewing. This is very likely to happen in industries where numerous rats gnaw through the wires and make them a threat to human life.

Moreover, they can also destroy precious ornaments and valuables in your house. In addition to it, they also cause food poisoning by contaminating the food items and filling them with harmful and disease-causing germs.

Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome:

If you ever inhale a rat’s urine or even the dust contaminated with a rat’s urine then you will catch this disease. Moreover, it can also spread if a rat bites you.

Rat-bite Fever:

As the name suggests, this disease is likely to happen if a rat bites you or scratch you. Furthermore, if you come in contact with a dead rat then also it is very likely to happen.

Plague:

Rats are the carriers of plague while fleas are transmitters of this disease. They operate through their blood-sucking process. Moreover, domestic rats are said to be one of the most common carriers of the plague.

Cutaneous Leishmaniasis:

This is a very lethal disease that is caused by a parasite that is transmitted to a human when a sandfly, fed on a dead wood rat, bites him/her.

Signs That You Have Rodents at Your Place:

Rodents are great at hiding and seek but these signs may bust them soon:

Rodents Droppings – You may see a dark black and tapered dropping off about 10-14mm in length.

Scratching noises – Weird scratching sounds at night are a clear indication of rodents at your place.

Torn Food packaging – Rats have incisor teeth by which they tore the packaged food items.

Rub marks – If you see teeth marks on your wooden furniture then it’s an indication of rats.

Burrows – If you have loamy flooring then you might see burrows within its cracks.

Nests – Rats usually build their nests with newspaper bits and fabrics to stay warm.

Treatment for Rodent Control

Sound environmental sanitation is the most effective strategy. Rats required three things: food, water & shelter. If these are denied rats will naturally decrease in density.

The control measure is divided in two parts :

1. Chemical Measure-The anticoagulant rodenticides are used. The poison will be mixed in food material  baiting is done.

Baiting will be done only for outside compound premises.

2. Mechanical Measure– Trapping is done by using Scissor Traps, Wonder Traps, Cages & Glue boards.

Trapping:

The Trapping is done by inspecting the runway of rodents & will be done for inside premises; if necessary it will be done for outside premises also. Baiting is done for outside premises.

Glue Boards, Wonder Traps, Cages & Scissor Traps are placed to inside premises by inspection the run way of rats.
